The Adventures of Emily and Blankie

Once there was a little girl named Emily. Now Emily was in almost everyway an ordinary little girl. She played with her dolls, fought with her sister and drove her parents to distraction. However, there was one thing about Emily that was not very ordinary at all. She had Blankie.

You may be thinking to yourself "Lots of little girls have blankies. What is so extrodinary about that?" You may also be thinking to yourself "I would really like a sandwich right about now" If you are thinking the former keep reading, you will not be disapointed. If you are thinking the latter then I would like to recommend a baked sub with spicy ham, salami and pepperoni. Go ahead, eat up the rest of us will wait for you.

Alright. Shall I continue?

Blankie was no ordinary piece of cloth. Blankie had a habit of... well perhaps you would understand more if I just skipped past this introductory stuff and went into the story.

Emily woke up at the first light of dawn, as was her tradition on any day that her Father did not have to work. Clutched in her tiny hand was a small scrap of cloth with a bear's head sewn in the center. Blankie. Blankie was the most important object in her world. She started and finished each day with Blankie in her hand. It was the hours in between that things tended to get interesting.

Emily bounced out of bed to wake Father so they would not waste the day "relaxing". It was while she was running down the hall that Blankie quietly slipped out of her hand and down the stairs. Emily did not even notice.

Blankie made her way past the cats that guarded the steps, out into the living room and out a window all before Emily could jump on her Father's head. Blankie glanced back at the house wishing she could spend the day with Emily, but someone was in danger and it was up to Blankie to help. A small sigh escaped the sewn lips of the bear's head and Blankie was off, gliding on the gentle breeze of a Saturday morning.

Meanwhile Emily had cajoled Father out of bed and was pushing him toward the shower. He had mentioned going to the Zoo on "one of these days that it is nice" and Emily was determined that meant "Today right now." Father made a note to himself to start locking the door to his room. Unfortunately he had made this note many times before and Emily has never been stopped. After a shower and breakfast Father and Emily headed for the Zoo. If they had looked up as they pulled out from Main Street onto the highway they might have noticed a small purple patch of cloth floating over head.

Blankie saw them. She was happy they were heading the same direction that she was. Maybe she would get to play with Emily after all. Ahead Blankie saw her first task of the day. A young boy was chasing a butterfly towards the freeway. She had to act quickly if he was going to be saved from darting onto the road. Blankie dove towards him, landing on the windshield of the car that was heading in his path. the car swerved and several other blew their horns in protest. The young boy stopped short and turned from the road running back towards safety.

Blankie was relieved, that had been close. She fluttered off the windshield and into the air.

Emily was sitting in her usual seat behind her Father as they drove toward the Zoo. She always looked forward to these little trips. She was excitedly asking what animals they were going to see first when a flash of purple whipped by her window. She turned to look but saw nothing.

Blankie smiled, Emily looked like she was having fun. But her respite was brief, ahead Blankie heard sirens and could see flashing lights surrounding a bank. "Work to do" Blankie thought and flew towards the activity.

Blankie approached the bank with caution. It had been a while since she had tried a situation this complex. For not the first time Blankie thought how much easier being a Super hero would be if she were not a small purple blanket.
To Be Continued...
